Our Visit to Seattle July 12-20, 2006

We wanted to see our son and his family so we flew to Seattle for a pleasing trip. The weather cooperated and we had day after day of exceptional northwest weather. We appreciated it all the more because Michigan was roasting. The highlight of our visit was seeing our granddaughter,  Anoushka, who will soon turn three. She was a delight. She is speaking so well and in constant motion.

Kary and I enjoyed taking Anoushka to the local playground

Josh and Anjana are doing a great job of parenting. They have every educational device you can by. Anoushka's favorite stories and videos are Dora the Explorer items. We liked them too. We really like to hear Anoushka say, "No swiping Swiper."

Josh and Anjana include Anoushka in any activity they can, including washing the Boxter

The single memorable highlight of the trip was when Anoushka said to Kary, "I love you grandma kary. You're my wife." We will never forget that comment.

Anoushka felt very safe with grandma Kary

Grandpa and granddaughter did the "bear dance"

Anoushka plays hard and then takes time to rest and bond

Josh and Anjana have a nice place on a hill with a distant view of Lake Washington. We love the stellar's jays that frequent the trees by the porch

Grandma and grandpa were trusted to baby-sit while Josh and Anjana enjoyed a party

We had a great time and a fine view of Mt. Rainier from the window as we flew out of Seatac

Mountain Climbing in Colorado- Fourteener Peak Bagging

We love camping and climbing in Colorado. What a treat for flatlanders like us. The fresh air of the Rockies, the amazing views, the challenge of climbing all day are just a few of the things that keep us going back to Colorado over and over again. We have met many wonderful people on the trails and at our campgrounds at trailheads. One particularly sweet memory is the night we spent with a group of climbers the night before we climbed Mt. Democrat. We ascended a very dubious road to about 10,000 feet only to find that the few spot to park a truck were taken. There were a few on the opposite side of a river that ran from a lake that remained mostly frozen in mid July. The truck made it across the river and we set up camp. Previously we had stopped for a large amount of firewood. Soon, several other vehicles crossed the river and set up camp. Another trekker from Denver had picked up wonderful supply of aspen sticks. He said they would burn like coal. That night the stars were thick in the moonless sky. Meteors saluted us from time to time. The fire burning high above the tree line was fueled by a steady warm wind. The conversations were great. Someone played the guitar. The scene reminded me of the aboriginal scene from the movie Mundo Carne, minus the playing of the didgeridoo. Much beer was drunk. Once again, Kary was the only woman on the mountain. The next day we all all succeed in reaching the top on a flawless day.

Looking west off Holy Cross

We had the Ogalala Reervoir to ourselves when we camped there. Sometimes we don't quite make it to CO in two days. With scenes like this to enjoy, who cares to travel further.

Wally's Fourteener list: Elbert, Massive, Harvard, Uncompahgre, Lincoln, Grays, Torreys, Quandary, Evans, Longs, Belford, Bross, Oxford, Democrat, Columbia, Bierstadt, Sherman, Redcloud, Holy Cross, Sunshine

Kary's list: Elbert, Grays, Belford, Democrat, Bierstadt

We are going back!
